Google today launched two new Android apps that aim to make life easier for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
First up, Live Transcribe does what its name suggests. The app takes real world speech and turns it into real-time captions, allowing people to see what's being spoken to them on their phone's screen using the device's microphone. It works with over 70 languages and dialects and offers two-way conversation using a type-back keyboard for users who can't or don't want to speak. It also supports external microphones for better accuracy.
Live Transcribe will gradually roll out to users in a limited beta starting today and will be preinstalled on Pixel 3 phones. The app works anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or network connection and supports Android phones running 5.0 Lollipop and up.
And then there's Sound Amplifier. With this app, you can use headphones to amplify the sounds around you. Google explains that the app increases quiet sounds while not over-boosting loud sounds. You can also customize the sound enhancement settings and apply noise reduction in the app.
Sound Amplifier is available on the Play Store and, like Live Transcribe, comes preinstalled on Pixel 3 phones. This app does require Android 9 Pie or higher.
