Quick Charge 3.0 Promises Even Faster Device Charging

Qualcomm today revealed its third-generation rapid-charging technology called Quick Charge 3.0. The revised technology relies on what Qualcomm calls Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV), an equation that lets phones, tablets, and other devices determine just how much power they need at any particular point in time -- all while remaining efficient. Quick Charge 3.0 supports a wider range of voltage options in 200mv increments between 3.6V and 20V. This lets phones take full advantage of a larger number of charger outputs based on the phone's needs. Qualcomm says Quick Charge 3.0 is backward compatible with 1.0 and 2.0, and works via USB Type-A, microUSB, USB Type-C, and proprietary connectors. The end result delivers up to an 80% charge in just 35 minutes. Qualcomm says Quick Charge 3.0 will be included in the Snapdragon 820, 620, 618, 617, and 430 processors and should reach consumer devices next year.
