Qualcomm today confirmed that its Snapdragon 820 processor will be equipped with the company's X12 LTE modem. The X12, announced in passing earlier this year, is Qualcomm's most advanced wireless radio module. It supports LTE CAT 12 for wireless download speeds approaching 600Mbps and LTE CAT 13 for uploads reaching 150Mbps. Qualcomm claims these speeds are triple those available to the Snapdragon 810 processor, which uses the X10 modem. The X12 is able to reach these speeds thanks to LTE-A carrier aggregation with up to three download links. The X12 also includes LTE-U, which will allow it to access LTE service over radio waves normally reserved for WiFi. The chip packages together 802.11ac in a 2x2 MIMO configuration as well as 802.ad for multi-gigabit WiFi speeds fast enough for 4K video transmission. Last, the X12 natively supports VoLTE, HD voice, HD video calling, and WiFi calling. Qualcomm says the X12 contains advanced software for managing LTE and WiFi connections so it always chooses the strongest and fastest signal. The Snapdragon 820 isn't expected to arrive until the first half of 2016.
