MWC 2019 may still be a couple of weeks away, but LG just couldn't wait any longer to share some info regarding one of its new devices.
The LG G8 ThinQ will include Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology in its front-facing camera. LG confirmed the news today, announcing that it's partnering with Infineon Technologies AG to include the company's REAL3 image sensor chip with ToF technology in the G8 ThinQ's selfie camera.
ToF captures infrared light as it bounces off of a subject to get a more accurate measurement of an object's distance from a camera. This helps to make the ToF sensor faster and more effective in ambient light, LG says, which can reduce the workload on the processor which helps to reduce power consumption.
All of this means that the LG G8 ThinQ's front-facing camera will offer better augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) functionality. The ToF technology will also help the G8 to offer enhanced security and depth measuring.
LG has long placed a focus on the camera capabilities of its flagship smartphones, and it looks like that'll continue with the G8. Typically when a new smartphone is announced, there's a lot of focus placed on its rear cameras and their capabilities, but with this news, there will be more interest in the performance and features of the LG G8 ThinQ's front-facing snapper.
