DxOMark adds selfie camera ratings, Pixel 3 and Note 9 come out on top

DxOMark is known for ranking the performance of smartphone cameras, but today the group announced a ranking category focused on selfies.

Today DxOMark launched its selfie test protocol for smartphones. The testing will include both lab and real world tests as well as a variety of subjects and lighting conditions. DxOMark also says that it'll test at three subject distances: 30, 55, and 120cm. The 30cm test will be meant for close-up selfies of one person, while the 120cm test will be for selfies taken from farther away, like for group portraits.

Other aspects of DxOMark's selfie testing will include a bokeh chart to measure the portrait mode effect, a Close-Up Dead Leaves chart to test noise and detail analysis, a realistic mannequin to test for repeatability, and an HDR portrait setup to measure backlit selfies.

Along with this announcement, DxOMark unveiled its first selfie rankings. The Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 came out on top, each with a score of 92, with the Pixel 3 offering a better focus system and a stronger contrast while the Note 9 has better exposure and color. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 earned a score of 92, and the iPhone XS Max rounded out the top four with a score of 82.

Selfies are extremely popular, and so it makes sense that DxOMark would begin offering dedicated selfie scores for new smartphones. Manufacturers are constantly improving the front-facing cameras on their smartphones and adding new selfie-centric features, and now folks who love to take selfies have a resource that can help them find the best smartphone for capturing their portrait.
