Just a couple of months after Google launched an official podcast app for Android, details on a new podcast app from Google have trickled out.
A new trademark for an app called Shortwave has been discovered. The trademark filing lists Shortwave as "computer software for mobile phonts, computers, and tablets, namely, software that allows users to search, access, and play digital audio files, and to share links to audio files".
Google has confirmed to The Verge that the Shortwave app is being developed by its Area 120 incubator, adding that the app "helps users to discover and consume spoken-word audio in new ways." However, the company emphasized that Shortwave is currently "a very early experiment", so there's not much more information about the app to share right now.
It's unclear what features Shortwave might have or what might make it stand out from the existing Google Podcasts app for Android. In fact, because this is an experimental app that's still in its early stages, it's possible that Shortwave will never actually see a full release. For now we'll just have to sit by and wait for Google to work on Shortwave and decide what it wants to do with it.
