Apple Releases Android App to Fight AirTag Stalking

Apple has released a new app called Tracker Detect that lets Android users scan for Apple AirTags that are potentially being used for stalking. The app doesn't require an Apple account. It specifically senses nearby AirTags (or similar devices compatible with Apple's Find My network) that have been separated from their owner but are nearby and stay nearby as the app user moves around. Once an AirTag meets the requirements as suspicious, the app user can command the AirTag to play a sound. The app user can then see instructions for how to disable the AirTag. While Apple's Find My network has strong protections to preserve privacy when used as intended, its potential use for stalking and similar illegal behavior has drawn criticism. Apple already has anti-stalking features available for iOS users, but extending this ability to Android is an important step for privacy and security.
