FCC Proposes Stricter Deadline on Tech to Fight Illegal Robocalls

The FCC today formally proposed moving up the deadline for smaller companies to implement STIR/SHAKEN technology by one year. This technology makes number spoofing difficult, allowing law enforcement and voice service providers to identify and block bad actors. Larger telecom companies must implement the technology by June 30th of this year. Smaller companies had until June 2023, but the FCC has recently determined that those smaller companies are "generating a high and increasing share of illegal robocalls compared to larger providers". This prompted the FCC's new proposal, to move the deadline for smaller companies up one year to June 30, 2022. The FCC is seeking comment on the rule change, as well suggestions for implementing and enforcing it.
