AT&T has begun deploying Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), starting in north Texas. DSS is an optional feature of the 5G NR standard that allows 5G and 4G technology to share the same frequency band, allowing greater and more efficient deployment of 5G in existing frequency bands. DSS can dynamically re-assign radio spectrum in real time based on demand. So as more 5G-capable devices are active in a given area, more frequencies are automatically re-assigned from 4G to 5G. Without DSS, only relatively large chunks of radio spectrum are re-assigned from 4G to 5G, and not in real-time, based on demand. AT&T was among the first to present and champion this technology, eventually driving it into 5G standards. Verizon also plans to deploy DSS.
