GlobalFoundries is going on the attack against TMSC over 16 patents that cover crucial aspects of cutting-edge chips used in a wide range of products, including most phones. Both companies manufacture such chips. TMSC's customers include Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Marvell, and Broadcom. GlobalFoundries is filing lawsuits this week in both the US and Germany — including with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) — seeking orders that will prevent the import of chips produced with the infringing technology, and products containing those chips. If successful, it would essentially block the import of all modern phones to the US.
