LG says V50 ThinQ is launching soon, but a foldable phone isn't

LG Kwon Bong-seok

Following leaks that gave us early looks at both the LG V50 ThinQ and LG G8 ThinQ, LG itself has revealed its upcoming smartphone plans.

The LG V50 ThinQ will launch between March and April, says LG president Kwon Bong-seok. "The latest V-series smartphone, which will be released between March and April, will be run on 5G and the G-series smartphone will become a premium LTE smartphone brand," the exec explained at a recent press conference. He added that 5G will be an opportunity for smartphone makers to grow their business, and so LG wants to release a high-quality 5G device.

Kwon also said that while LG had considered launching a foldable smartphone alongside its first 5G smartphone, it ultimately decided to wait. He explained that LG's focus is to "regain its market position", and so it's too early for the company launch a foldable smartphone. If consumers react well to foldable phones, though, Kwon asays that LG is "fully ready to respond".

LG is teaming up with Sprint to launch the V50 ThinQ, which will include features like a Snapdragon 855 processor, a 4000mAh battery, and a Vapor Chamber to help keep it cool while running on Sprint's 5G network. We'll see more of the LG V50 ThinQ and LG G8 ThinQ at MWC later this month, so if you're a Sprint customer looking to hop onto 5G as soon as possible, that's something to keep an eye out for.
