Amazon buying Eero, maker of home mesh routers

Apple used to be in the router game, and Google currently offers its own router hardware. Now Amazon will be in the router market, too.

Amazon has acquired Eero, a company that makes home mesh Wi-Fi routers. "We are incredibly impressed with the eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work,” said Dave Limp, Amazon's SVP of Devices and Services. “We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we’re committed to continue innovating on behalf of customers.”

There's no word yet on how much Apple may have paid for Eero. The deal is subject to closing conditions.

"From the beginning, eero’s mission has been to make the technology in homes just work,” said Eero co-founder and CEO Nick Weaver. “We started with WiFi because it’s the foundation of the modern home. Every customer deserves reliable and secure WiFi in every room. By joining the Amazon family, we’re excited to learn from and work closely with a team that is defining the future of the home, accelerate our mission, and bring eero systems to more customers around the globe.”

Eero offers a base system that's priced at $199 and smaller Beacons priced at $149, or you can get combo packs starting at $299. These setup help to spread Wi-Fi throughout your house, and Eero's system has been regularly praised for its ease of use. Now Amazon is buying Eero, and while it's unclear exactly what's going to happen in the future, it seems unlikely that Amazon is going to discontinue Eero products or anything like that.

Have you ever used Eero routers?
