Vivo Apex 2019 shown off with no ports, 12GB of RAM, and a full-screen fingerprint reader

Vivo Apex 2019 official

One day after we met the Meizu Zero, a holeless smartphone with no charging port or physical buttons, another no-port smartphone has been announced.

The Vivo Apex 2019 is another holeless smartphone. Or rather, nearly holeless, as it does have a microphone slit below its screen. There are no ports or SIM trays to be found here, though, and Vivo has included an in-display fingerprint sensor that the company says covers the entire screen.

Speaking of screen, the Vivo Apex 2019 also uses its screen as a speaker since there are no traditional speaker ports here. And because there's no charging port, Vivo has equipped the Apex 2019 with a "MagPort" on its backside, which is a magentic pogo pin connector that you'll use to charge the phone. eSIM is also included since Vivo is skipping a traditional SIM card tray, and a set of three pressure-sensitive buttons will likely let you power the device on and off and control volume.

The Vivo Apex 2019 is currently still a concept phone, but Vivo has outlined some specs that the upcoming holeless phone will offer. Those include a Snapdragon 855 processor, a massive 12GB of RAM and 512GB of built-in storage, and a dual rear camera setup with 12MP and 13MP snappers. Vivo plans to pack 5G connectivity in there, too. All of those features are crammed into a "Super Unibody" design with "Curved-Surface Waterdrop Glass" that offers extra thickness around the edges.

There's no word on when the Vivo Apex 2019 might launch or how much it'll cost when it does. Considering its super high-end specs, holeless design, and Super Unibody design, though, we wouldn't expect it to be cheap.

Holeless phones like the Vivo Apex 2019 and Meizu Zero look pretty cool, offering a clean and seamless design. Using these devices every day could take some adjusting, though. For example, since there's no traditional charging port, you'll be on your own for remembering to bring your charging cable everywhere rather than being able to use a more common microUSB or USB-C cable when you need to power back up.

We'll likely see more of the Vivo Apex 2019 at MWC next month, so stay tuned.
