Samsung Gear S3 and Gear Sport updates bring improvements to Health, Messages, and more

The Gear S3 and Gear Sport may not be Samsung's latest smartwatches, but that isn't stopping them from getting major software updates.

Both the Gear S3 and Gear Sport are now receiving updates to Tizen 4.0.0.2. The Gear S3's update is firmware version R760XXU2DSA1, and the Gear Sport getting firmware version R600XXU1BSA1.

As for what's included, there are several new Samsung Health goodies included in these updates, like support for more indoor workouts and back-to-back workouts. The Health widget is gaining support for sleep stage information, too.

Samsung has given the Quick Panel an improved UI with this update, too, and there are now theater and sleep modes that can be toggled from that Quick Panel. The notification panel can now show MMS messages and automatically play GIFs, as well. And the Messages app can now save draft messages and now supports more than 1,000 emojis.

The updates for the Gear S3 and Gear Sport are now rolling out in the U.S., and they each come in at around 300MB. As with most software updates, though, these are going out in phases, so it could be a few days before you see an update on your wrist.
