Apple Open Sources Swift Programming Language

Apple today made its Swift programming language available as an open source download under the Apache 2.0 license. Apple first debuted Swift in June 2014. It is meant to help developers create iOS and OS X apps in a simpler environment than the traditional Objective-C. Apple says the source code is hosted on GitHub where anyone can use it to design and build apps. Because it is open source, developers can contribute code back to the project, which is being governed by a team of engineers at Apple. The download includes libraries, a debugger, and package manager. Apple also launched Swift.org, a central hub meant to help developers learn more about Swift.
