Google said it intends to offer warnings to users of its Gmail service when they receive emails that arrive through non-encrypted connections. A recent report published by Google and several research partners demonstrates that email on a whole is safer than it was two years ago, but some risks remain. Gmail identified several security issues that warrant attention. For example, some areas of the internet are preventing messages from being encrypted by fiddling with SSL connection requests. Another threat lurks on malicious DNS servers that are publishing fake routing information to email servers on the hunt for Gmail. Google says this angle of attack could allow people to alter the content of messages before they are delivered to the intended recipient. It is with these issues in mind that Google has decided to warn Gmail users of potentially unsecured messages. Google said the warnings will begin to appear in inboxes over the next few months.
