Apple today confirmed it has purchased a small camera technology company called LinX. The company, based in Israel, sells small cameras and sensors for smartphones and tablets. Together with its own algorithms, LinX's technology can be used to gauge depth and create three-dimensional image maps. Apple didn't disclose terms of the acquisition, but sources cited by the Wall Street Journal peg the value of LinX at about $20 million. Apple didn't say what it might do with LinX's technology. Amazon's Fire Phone, released in July 2014, had four user-facing cameras to create 3D effects within the user interface.
