Facebook LOL in testing as a teen-focused feed of memes

Facebook is testing a new feature to get teens using its service more.

Facebook's new effort is called LOL, and it's a special feed of funny videos, memes, and more. It's got categories like "Animals", "Fails", and "Pranks", and of course it's got a "For You" section, too. The content is pulled from News Feed posts by the top meme pages on Facebook.

While it hasn't been officially announced, Facebook did confirm to TechCrunch that it's testing LOL with a small group of users in the U.S. The beta is reportedly currently being tested by 100 high school students and is in the Watch tab of the Facebook app, but Facebook says that there's no plans to put LOL in Watch and that it hasn't yet decided if LOL will get its own dedicated app or if it'll get a home in Facebook's main app.

We've seen Facebook try to get more teens using its apps as it rolled out apps like Poke, Slingshot, and the recent TikTok clone Lasso, and this new LOL feature is just another attempt to get younger people using its app. Unfortunately for Facebook, it doesn't sound like early impressions of LOL are strong, as it's reportedly been described as having a "cringey" design and showing content that's weeks old.
